[00:43:18] <eruditehermit> Hi I have a question about how to resolve package dependencies. I have my own packages in my own repo. I have a leaf package that depends on packages higher up in the tree. The leaf package pins it's dependencies with =. However, someone can publish an update to a dependency higher up the tree and I will get an error message of the form:

[01:19:15] <sney> if you're relying on n-m for your network connection, you might need to
[01:19:33] <sney> ... might need to manually bring up the network before you can install it again
[01:19:56] <sney> what happens when you run that command is that apt removes the network-manager package and any of its global configuration files in /etc.

[01:23:58] <sney> eruditehermit: dependencies managed in d/control can be tricky, if you aren't already there I recommend asking in #packaging on OFTC (note, right now you are on freenode). Usually you need some combination of Breaks/Conflicts/Replaces to avoid the situation you mentioned.

[05:28:58] <mrjpaxton[m]> Another option is to set up a Debian Testing `debootstrap` chroot or in a container like systemd-nspawn or LXC, and run an updated vim from there. Problem with that method is the initial setup of containers requires some technical knowledge and time. I would NOT actually recommend mixing Debian Testing/Unstable repos with Stable at all, though.

[05:30:25] <mrjpaxton[m]> Usually, if you want to go with Testing, you are forefitting all the benefits of Stable, and this channel does not support anyone using Testing or Sid. For support on those, you want to use #debian-next channel on OFTC.

[22:30:53] <cybrNaut> sney: thanks!
[22:31:15] <sney> the standard bios/legacy one and usually what's used for vm guests, unless some efi-specific feature is needed
[22:31:37] <cybrNaut> seems unexpected though, because a lot of stuff is amd 64 i think
[22:32:42] <sney> 32-bit and 64-bit x86 are identical for a lot of low-level stuff, this is one of them it seems
[22:33:16] <sney> nobody literally uses i386 anymore either, it's 686 at the very least, but the architecture still has that name
[22:33:57] <cybrNaut> it's a 12 y.o. machine, but amd64 is the platform for most of the packages. Perhaps my hardware doesn't do UEFI, so grub has to treat it as i386.. does that sound right?
[22:34:34] <greycat> grub-pc is for "Legacy" booting, what BIOS machines use, and what some newer machines can be configured to use
[22:34:43] <greycat> it has nothing to do with amd64 or i386
[22:35:01] <sney> this desktop I'm typing on is about that old, and doesn't have efi. so it's likely that either efi is missing, or it's an early enough implementation that it only supports windows
