[11:24:06] <BlakesSeven> Good morning. I'm trying to track down a problem and I need some help. Problem: I'm using rsync to copy files from one volume to a second volume. 1st volume is connected via SATA. 2nd volume is USB3. Transfer speeds begin at +60MBps then it hits a wall and drops to sub 10MBps.
[11:24:57] *** Joins: nifker (~Thunderbi@replaced-ip )
[11:25:22] <ratrace> that's because the kernel is lying. initial high speeds are due to writeback cache (pagefile cache) then it goes down as the kernel actually starts to push those pages out via usb. are those speeds mega BITS per second, or did you misspell mega BYTES per second?
[11:25:43] *** Joins: zalt_ (~devp@replaced-ip )
[11:25:54] <BlakesSeven> MBps = Megabytes Mbps = Megabits, yeah?
[11:26:32] *** Quits: zalt (~devp@replaced-ip ) (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[11:26:47] <ratrace> some would say MBps is bits too. so you actually mean MB/s ?
[11:27:13] <BlakesSeven> I'm not sure the kernel is lying....I didn't experience the drop during the first 500GB of data transferred. The speeds were good and now they start good, and drop off the cliff.
[11:27:15] <BlakesSeven> Megabytes.
[11:27:20] <ratrace> so 10MB/s is not uncommon for random read/write USB ... spinning rust?
[11:27:32] *** Joins: NetTerminalGene (~Thunderbi@replaced-ip )
[11:27:55] <ratrace> BlakesSeven: also note that transferring new large files is more sequential and less IOPS-y than transferring large number of smaller files. are you hitting a pool of larger number of smaller files when the speed drops?
[11:28:01] *** debhelper sets mode: +l 1174
[11:28:27] <BlakesSeven> Platters, configured in a striped set.
[11:28:28] <ratrace> anyway these numbers don't look out of the ordinary for USB file transfer
[11:29:22] <BlakesSeven> It seems out of the ordinary for USB 3.0, doesn't it?
[11:29:27] <ratrace> could also check dmesg to see if there's flaky USB connection, if there are any errors that cause repeated commands
[11:29:34] <ratrace> BlakesSeven: it doesn't
[11:30:16] <ratrace> theoretical max transfer speed for usb3 is one thing, but there's a ton of other factors. there's huge latency for usb commands, so many tiny trnsfers will suffer huge performance penalty
[11:30:34] <BlakesSeven> The file sizes are between 350MB and several GB. There aren't really any small files.
[11:31:09] <ratrace> and even with what you think is sequential write, with rsync it's a random RW workload, as rsync transfers in batches, rechecks delta chunks, etc...
[11:31:16] <BlakesSeven> I get that, but that's not what I generally have experienced using USB 3.0 and it certainly seemed to perform well during the first half of the transfer.
[11:32:29] *** Joins: TomyWork (~TomyLobo@replaced-ip )
[11:32:50] <ratrace> see if -W helps as that should (in theory) reduce the number of USB commands and thus latency
[11:33:39] <BlakesSeven> I can stop the transfer right now, delete the last 5 files it transferred at 8MBps, restart the sync and watch them transfer at +60MB/s and then at some point it'll fall off that cliff again. I don't believe it's sequential read/writes that's the issue. If that were the case would those same files transfer at the same speeds?
[11:34:01] <BlakesSeven> It feels like some sort of bus/buffer saturation.
[11:34:28] *** Joins: dreamon (~dreamon@replaced-ip )
[11:34:28] <ratrace> yes in that case, that doesn't look like IOPS issue.
[11:34:56] <BlakesSeven> I just don't know how to troubleshoot at that level.
[11:35:04] <ratrace> did you check dmesg?
[11:35:50] <BlakesSeven> No errors or weird messages since reboot, which I did like 30 minutes ago.
[11:37:27] <ratrace> then I suppose you could try stracing rsync, with -o so it outputs into a file rather than much slower console or terminal. maybe even put that file onto a tmpfs so that it minimizes latency interference
[11:38:17] <ratrace> consider using -T as well so it logs times spent in syscalls, so you can compare the "before" and "after"
[11:39:02] <BlakesSeven> I'll give that a try. Thanks.
[11:39:14] <ratrace> how much RAM you got there?
[11:39:29] <BlakesSeven> 8GB, currently using 5GB.
[11:40:31] <ratrace> and how soon after rsync started does it drop off? is it after some constant time, or after some constant number of bytes transferred? you can use --info=progress2 to observe overall transfer progress
[11:42:02] <jelly> BlakesSeven, show the mount options for your usb-connected device.
[11:42:12] <jelly> verify there's no "sync" option
[11:43:01] <BlakesSeven> ratrace, sometimes a few second after transfer starts, other times it can transfer a couple of files and then drop.
[11:43:03] <ratrace> ahhh.... one more possibility. rsync takes memory. if you're using 5 out of 8 .... does it perhaps start swapping when the speed drops off?
[11:43:20] <jelly> 10MB/s is a slow USB2 disk or stick speed, usb3 connected sata HDD ought to go 60-100MB/s sustained single thread write
[11:43:43] <BlakesSeven> ratrace, currently using 2MB of swap.
[11:43:48] <BlakesSeven> So not really.
[11:43:54] <jelly> but "slow down after 500MB" sounds like dirty buffers in kernel, that is "kernel lying"

[11:46:05] <jelly> I have no idea how zfs works, and how it allocates RAM
[11:46:06] <ratrace> you say ZFS ... ZFS's ARC is in conflict with pagecache and in some circumstances too slow to release memory, so it _could_ cause swapping when rsync requires more RAM
[11:46:08] <BlakesSeven> ratrace, the speeds drop has already happened. Currently using 2MB of swap.
[11:46:17] <ratrace> oh, okay then.
[11:46:50] <jelly> BlakesSeven, run "iostat -mxN 5", let it run for a minute, pastebin
[11:46:58] <ratrace> I'm using rsync to back up ZFS snapshots (yes, not using zfs send|recv for a good reason), and haven't observed that problem. I've got millions of files to sift through per run

[22:35:27] <greycat> if you're in Linux, it's simply "cp image /device" where image is the filename and device is something like /dev/sdb or /dev/sdc
