[01:20:07] <quadrathoch2> Bugz000, just use the official repo from Oracle ;)
[01:20:23] <Bugz000> surely i didn't miss that... ffs one sec
[01:20:36] <sney> if you're having an "error about dkms headers or something" that *probably* means that you need to install linux-headers-amd64. and then the dkms package will build and you're off to the races.
[01:20:54] <sney> but virtualbox isn't in the current debian version so that would mean you're on oldstable anyway
[01:20:55] <Bugz000> the headers are installed but uhhhm
[01:21:48] <Bugz000> sorry my brain is only half alive at this point
[01:21:48] <sney> typically with virtualbox the #1 recommendation is "use something else" such as virt-manager which does the same thing without any annoying oracle idiosyncracies.
[01:22:02] <sney> but really I'm just guessing since your questions are so vague

[05:35:33] <maxrazer> I believe the kernel updates do work without rebooting. However, the system may be unstable if you don't reboot after updating the kernel. You should reboot.
[05:36:03] <allan_wind> annadane: yeah, I know of kpatch but don't have that installed.
[05:36:06] <maxrazer> I've had systems crash when I continued to operate it after a kernel update without rebooting.
[05:36:51] <themill> uname -r doesn't indicate whether you have installed the security update btw
[05:38:09] <annadane> we should start calling them service pack updates so people actually reboot

[05:38:56] <themill> No, the kernel ABI is only incremented when interfaces change such that you need to recompile external modules
[05:39:50] <allan_wind> themill: yeah, not being clear... so I thought I was running 4.19.0-8-amd64 and now running -9
[05:40:01] <themill> that doesn't happen on its own ;)
[05:40:35] <themill> what does uname -a say?

[14:33:44] <hwm4rgs> If you're going to use it just for your own project, it's pretty neat to just put it inside your project in order to not clutter up the system

[23:41:35] <dpkg> From Debian 5.0 "Lenny" onwards, apt-get and aptitude both install "Recommended" packages by default. From <policy> section 7.2, Recommends, "declares a strong, but not absolute, dependency. The Recommends field should list packages that would be found together with this one in all but unusual installations." You're not that unusual, trust us. By not installing "recommended" packages you will be missing functionality.

[23:50:39] <sney> debian's default python in buster is python 2 and there are many known issues with having /usr/bin/python point to python3. bullseye (the to-be-released debian 11) will have python 3 as the default and there was a whole chaotic transition to get to that point

The vast majority of the time, they're necessary for normal use. Leave them on and only disable in specific situations
[23:57:01] <brabo> sney: but you're blaming this on recommends... because recommends would have installed python2.7 and had the python symlink point to that?
