[00:21:59] <zodd> On Buster, openjdk11 is the default. I have a java app which uses deprecated libs from jdk8. How can I best add these libs? Preferably as .deb packages? (and find out which ones are needed (I assume I need to use jdeps for that)?
[00:22:51] <randompleb> i think its openjdk-8-jdk?
[00:23:25] <sney> debian doesn't distribute multiple java versions within one release.
[00:23:35] <sney> best bet is probably through java-package:
[00:23:38] <sney> !java-package
[00:23:38] <dpkg> java-package (formerly mpkg-j2se, j2se-package) provides the make-jpkg utility for creating Debian packages from manually downloaded <Java> distributions; Oracle Java 6 (update >= 10) and Oracle Java 7 are currently supported. java-package is available for Debian 7 "Wheezy" and later systems in <contrib>. replaced-url
[00:24:20] <zodd> I understood jdk8 is a LTS release, but it is old even for Debian standards
[00:24:21] <somiaj> zodd: why does it have to be a .deb, java is fairly self contained
[00:24:38] <somiaj> just extra java to /opt or somewhere, and setup JAVA_HOME approeprtly
[00:24:58] <somiaj> maybe link the java binary to /usr/local/bin if you don't want to type out the full path.
[00:25:02] <zodd> I like a single package management system. Simplifies maintainability.
[00:25:14] <randompleb> Yes somiaj is right. Debian buster does not have openjdk-8 anymore in it's repo
[00:25:23] <somiaj> we sney there

[00:26:00] <somiaj> zodd: I can see that, though I find the work of mataing my own deb often counteracts any advantange.
[00:26:29] <zodd> I agree. Alternative would be a docker container
[00:26:30] <somiaj> though I use to put java in /opt/java-version, have a lin /opt/java to the current version, then just updated the link when orcacle released security fixes

[00:27:10] <zodd> for the record: my inquiry is because of Jibri (add on to Jitsi))

[21:57:45] <tinga> Hi. Any suggestion to learn firewalling in Linux from scratch? I've been using Linux for 20 years and iptables and its predecessor for basically as long (lightly), but every so often I'm just puzzled about why rules I set up are not working. This can't be so bad for everyone so I need to learn it the way others do.
