952 [14:00:09] <xormor> BenNZ, I was raised on MS-DOS systems too. I think I used MS-Windows more in 1997-2007, for 10 years, and had used MS-DOS more in 1987-1997, for 10 years. Now I have used Debian GNU/Linux for many years, and all kinds of GNU/Linux distros from 2004 up to now, 15 years. I had an Internet Service Provider in 1995-1996 that had a GNU/Linux server, a BSD server and an AT&T Bell Unix server. It was called Cute Communications, cute.fi.

963 [14:08:41] <xormor> one of the reasons I like computers and linux is that I like to write and read. I sometimes escape a bit from the "real world" with real life human interaction to my "electronic world", with the Internet - I think it is sometimes very easy to get all kinds of opinions from all kinds of people just sitting on front of a screen, reading and writing. I usually do the Internet things just for my own amusement. Debian GNU/Linux is a techno toy for me.

2015 [22:55:27] <somiaj> Habbie: in short it is packages in testing that are backported to stretch, which incldues both newer versions and newer packages. Due to debian's release philopshy not alining with various upstream release/support philosophy, more and more certain packages are provided in stretch-backports so debian security team doesn't have to support the frozen version.

2020 [22:56:04] <Habbie> somiaj, are there packages for which debian security says 'god no, just use the backports version' ?
2021 [22:56:16] <somiaj> Habbie: example of this is virtualbox. Orcale policy won't allow backporting security fixes to older versions, so debian cannot provide secuirty support to vritualbox. Thus it is provided via stretch-backports which isn't directly supported by debian-security
2022 [22:56:32] <somiaj> Habbie: well such packages are often removed from stable because debian security cannot support them.
2023 [22:56:43] <somiaj> so the only place you can get them is from upstream or backports.

2026 [22:57:10] <Habbie> somiaj, security cannot support it, so it's not in stable, so you get it from backports, without the security support - thanks, now i get it
2027 [22:57:45] <somiaj> Habbie: yup, because debian policy is to only support the frozen version in stretch. Without the help of upstream this can be a very hard thing to do, and debian secuirty only has so many voluenteers.

2029 [22:59:01] <somiaj> and here I would say, it is provided in stretch-backports as a service to users without offical security support (though often securitty bugs cause a newer version to be put in stretch-backports -- with often a delay)
