I set my soundcard to Digital Stereo Output and now I can't change it back to what it used to be and can't find a way to reset the sound settings to their default. I have tried unplugging and replugging the headphones and rebooting, and it stays on DigitalStereo which doesn't output any sound. How do I force reset the sound settings in Gnome?

[05:21:19] <JohnA> I need to replace my laptop which just died, after 9 years. I am a little out of date on what HW might be "good" with Linux - Debian in particular. Suggestions?
[05:21:52] <usney> maybe just the hard drive died?
[05:22:01] <usney> you could upgrade to a new one
[05:22:06] <JohnA> would lenovo be a "good" candidate?
[05:23:49] <JohnA> usney: for me - if so no system would not power up or respond in any way.
[05:24:54] <usney> I guess a laptop with ATI graphics
[05:25:29] <usney> and with removable wifi cards..etc. in case they don't work with debian
[05:25:47] <usney> then you can replace them with ones that do
[05:26:11] <usney> I always hear bad things about nvidia and linux
[05:27:53] <usney> JohnA a sure fire way to know if your laptop works with linux is to buy from companies that sell laptops with linux preinstalled
[05:28:23] <usney> then you can get the model they are selling and buy from another dealer for cheaper possibly
