[07:26:51] <SerajewelKS> why would update-grub generate an unbootable config when run from within the target system, but generate a bootable config when run from rescue mode of the install cd when chrooted into the same system?
[07:27:12] <SerajewelKS> every kernel update, i have to boot from the installer cd in order to generate my grub config. if i reboot without doing this, i get greeted with a grub shell.
[07:29:48] <SerajewelKS> if it helps, / is with an lvm, which is within a raid1
[07:30:12] <SerajewelKS> oddly, the installer rescue mode detects the lvm volumes even before the raid is assembled!?

[07:37:29] <SerajewelKS> which is what my system generates with update-grub
[07:37:39] <SerajewelKS> the installer cd in rescue mode instead generates "set lang=C" which works

[19:45:59] <Kobaz> 4.5 oh dear

[19:46:33] <greycat> possibly not even Debian

[19:46:58] <Kottizen> I'm running Debian as a guest system in VMware and 4.5 is apparently the last kernel where virtual E1000e network card was working.

[19:49:06] <Kottizen> greycat: The other option, VMXNET 3, works with Debian but it's flawed with a bug causing the guest system to freeze after a few hours.
[19:49:28] <Kobaz> To workaround this issue, use vmxnet3 type virtual network adapter.
[19:49:32] <Kottizen> Kobaz: Sorry, yes, 4.15! What's the difference?
[19:49:42] <greycat> This "kb" (ugh microsoft term) article says the problem STARTED in 4.15. So just use the standard 4.9 stretch kernel.
[19:49:44] <Kobaz> Kottizen: 4.5 is a lot older
[19:50:12] <Kobaz> Kottizen: sounds like a vmware problem...
