[10:12:12] <Walakea> When i plug my headphones into the audio jack connector on my laptop the audio sounds as if it was plugged in just halfway, i noticed that recently the audio (through audio jack) sometimes muted and i had to connect headphones again, now it just sounds bad. Is this a hardware problem? I am using Pulse audio.

[12:23:36] <chromesy> Hi all, so in the next painful chapter of trying to have a Chromebook that I can plug in different OSes on USB keys (namely Debian and Kali), I have got to the point where I can get live versions working; I have a Debian live USB and a Kali Linux live USB.
[12:23:36] <chromesy> Of course the problem with these live OSes is that there is no persistence and, because I need a non-free kernel module to drive my wireless, I find myself having to install it every time I use the OS.
[12:23:36] <chromesy> All I want is to install normall Debian to one USB and Kali Linux to another. There have been problems with doing both: Debian 9 gets to a point (the install base system step) where it gives the message "Debootstrap Error: Failed to determine the codename for the release.". Kali Linux keeps insisting that it cannot detect a CD-Rom (of course it cannot on a Chomebook, why is this important anyway?). I never expected such a
[12:23:39] <chromesy> basic task to be so difficult. :)

[23:23:51] <jhutchins> kale: The nice thing about rsync is that it checksums the transfer.
[23:24:14] <kale> jhutchins: true, but its 300GB, takes too long
[23:25:15] <jhutchins> kale: It's not going to be any slower than any encrypted connection(ssh).
[23:25:39] <jhutchins> kale: It has internal compression available if your connection is restreicted.
[23:26:02] <kale> jhutchins: yes, for the first transfer i agree, but when i change a single file, unison finds that single file pretty fast. rsync has to check everything
[23:27:21] <jhutchins> kale: It's not like unison doesn't have to check everything, it's just a different method.
[23:27:47] <kale> jhutchins: true, but it does not checksum all the files again
[23:28:07] <jhutchins> kale: Rsync has a LOT of proven reliability. Unison may be fine, but it's worth trying a different, known-to-be-reliable method.
[23:28:25] <jhutchins> kale: We KNOW rsync is not going to corrupt the files in transit.

[23:28:59] <jhutchins> kale: Therefore, if we use rsync and still get corrupted files, it's probably dues to btrfs problems.

[23:29:49] <jhutchins> kale: If we use rsync and DON'T get corrupted files, there's a good chance it's something about unison - although absence of failure isn't proof of the problem.
